 SNOW& ICE REMOVAL INFORMATION
 Avoid Snowplow Rage !!!

  • Park cars off the street.
  • Don't shovel driveways out to the street until plowing is complete!
  • Do not shovel driveway snow onto the street – This is against Township Ordinance and creates a hazard.
  • Do not shovel sidewalks onto street – this is also against Township Ordinance and creates a hazard as well. (note – Residents have 24 hours to remove snow from sidewalk per Township Ordinance.)
  • You must have a police report in order to file a claim regarding damage to your vehicle caused by Township equipment.
  • Avoid Towing and Impound Charges.  Township Ordinance 7-6.3 a –b imposes temporary parking prohibition when snow has fallen and accumulated.  At this point an emergency shall exist until the snow has ceased and the streets have been plowed sufficiently.  Any unoccupied vehicles may be towed and impounded at the owner's expense.  Please cooperate with plow crews by parking off-street until after plowing is complete.  This will ensure safe, clean streets.

To report an ice condition call 973-983-2891.

To report a snow & ice related emergency off hours, please contact the Rockaway Township Police Department at 973-625-4000.

MAILBOX REPLACEMENT POLICY
This policy pertains to mailboxes damaged by Township snowplows.

The mailbox will be checked to see if a simple repair can be made.  If so, this will be done.  If the post is broken, but the mailbox can be reused, our workers will remount your mailbox on a new wooden post.  If the mailbox cannot be reused, it will be replaced with a new mailbox. The work will be scheduled as soon as possible after the ground thaws.

The Township cannot participate in the replacement of the luxury type mailboxes which are often installed by homeowners.  These mailboxes far exceed the budget limitation of the Township.  If you choose to install such a mailbox you do so at your own risk.  The limits of the replacement by the Township are as outlined above.  The Township does not provide lettering or numbering on the box.

To report a mailbox damaged DPW equipment please contact the Department of Public Works at 973-983-2891.

 DRIVEWAY & ROAD OPENING PERMITS

Before installing a hard surface driveway that connects to any Township road you must obtain a driveway permit through the Construction Department – (973)983-2809.  Your driveway must be inspected before and after installation of new driveway by the Department of Public Works.  Please call (973)983-2891 to schedule.

Whenever digging or excavating in the road or right-of-way you must first obtain a street opening permit from the Township Clerk (973)627-7200.

*** Please Remember – You MUST call for underground utility mark-outs before you dig.  Call the NJ One Call Center @ 800-272-1000
