Stay Strong All Week Long! Adult Exercise Program

The Division of Health is very pleased to offer Rockaway Township's older adults a variety of terrific exercise programs. Through yoga, therabands workout, Tai Chi and other activities, residents can avail themselves to fitness classes led by subject matter experts, and can stay fit while doing so. Classes run on a 12 week schedule during the spring and fall, and all classes are held in the Rockaway Township Municipal Building court room. Registration is required and packets may be acquired at the Division of Health office, also located in the Municipal Building, Monday through Friday from 8:30am – 4:30pm. If you have any questions or require additional information, please call the Division of Health at 973-983-2848. Please read on for brief descriptions of the Township's exercise programs, and see our calendar of exercise classes!

Yoga

We are excited to welcome our new yoga instructor, Beth Wieczerzak, who will be teaching a "fusion-style" class that will include components of stretching, breathing, yoga and core work geared to the adult population. The classes will focus on gentle stretching with basic yoga postures and breathing techniques. Exercises will be done to relaxing background music, with attention given to reducing stress.  Information on the many aspects of a healthy lifestyle will be incorporated into each class. The Level One class will focus on basic movements and will be done primarily seated. Level Two will include aspects of Level One, in addition to gentle movements and postures performed while standing.

Tai Chi

Tai Chi is a Chinese form of physical exercise that is characterized by a series of very slow, deliberate, graceful body movements. Thai Chi is practiced for many reasons, not least of which is the significant health benefit. We are pleased to announce that Sandra Pruzan will be returning as our Tai Chi instructor, and in this program, you will learn a basic Arthritis Foundation-approved 12 movement form based on the Sun style of Tai Chi. This style of Tai Chi is easy for beginners yet contains great depth.

The Basic class will be geared toward learning simple, foundational moves. The Beyond Basics class will build on what is presented in the Basic class and will include additional movements and a deeper understanding of Tai Chi principles.

Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program (AFEP)

The Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program is a recreational group exercise and education program designed specifically for anyone with arthritis or other musculoskeletal conditions. Participants range from persons with limited joint mobility to those who are relatively active with only mild joint involvement. The variety of exercises offered in the program is geared toward reducing pain and stiffness, and helping maintain or improve mobility. Classes are one hour in length and include a segment devoted to relaxation.

Rockaway Township Municipal Alliance Committee

The Municipal Alliance Committee is a community organization funded by the Governor's Council on Alcoholism and Drug Abuse. The Alliance works to provide a coordinated effort in promoting and supporting drug and alcohol prevention and education programs, as well as related activities within the community. The adult exercise classes, including Yoga, Tai Chi and the Arthritis Foundation Exercise Program, receive financial support from the Alliance. Donations provide additional funds to help to underwrite the expenses involved in running the classes.
