“Prayer, America’s Hope” is the theme of this year’s National Day of Prayer, which is observed in communities throughout the United States.  Area residents are invited to join local religious leaders, civic leaders, school children and members of the public at the 14th annual Rockaway Township National Day of Prayer observance, scheduled for Noon on Thursday, May 7st at the Rotary Memorial Gazebo, located on Park Lakes

The tradition of national and civic prayers dates back to the First Continental Congress in 1775.  In 1988, both houses of Congress unanimously passed legislation setting aside the first Thursday of May as National Day of Prayer; in 1994, the New Jersey legislation designated the first Thursday of May as Day of Prayer in that state.  It offers the opportunity for people to join in united prayer to give thanks for blessings received, to request healing for wounds endured, and to ask for guidance for all our leaders.

In the event of rain, the observance will be held in the Municipal Building, 65 Mt. Hope Road.  Sign interpreters may be present.  For additional information, please contact the Rockaway Township Municipal Building at 973-983-2807/2800.

FREE RABIES CLINIC FOR DOGS & CATS

A condition known as “White Nose Syndrome”(WNS) has been identified in the bats hibernating within Rockaway Township.  This syndrome, which has not been shown to affect humans or other animals, causes hibernating bats to leave their caves in search of food.  These bats are being found in a weakened state or dying in areas that are accessible to our pets, both inside and outside of residents’ homes.  An up-to-date rabies vaccine is essential to protecting you pets from rabies infection.

Therefore, the Health Department recommends that dog and cat owners check the expiration date of their pets’ rabies vaccination.  To assist residents in addressing this important issue the Rockaway Township Health Department has scheduled a FREE RABIES CLINIC on Saturday, February 28, 2009. The clinic will take place at the Township Municipal Garage located a 540 Green Pond Road (next to Katherine D. Malone School) from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. All animals must be restrained.

As a reminder, all dog and cat licenses were required to be renewed by January 31, 2009.

In order to renew your pets’ license(s) the rabies vaccination must be valid through November 1, 2009.  If you have already acquired your pet’s 2009 license we have already confirmed that the rabies vaccination is valid.

Should you have any questions, please contact the Health Department at 973-983-2848/2849.

January 8, 2009

Curbside pickup of Christmas trees will take place the week of January 12th.

Trees must be placed curbside by Sunday evening, January 11th.  Residents must remove tree bags.  Trees in plastic bags or buried under snow will not be collected.  If there is inclement weather, please be patient; uncover the tree and leave it at the curb.  Residents may also bring trees to the McVeigh Recycling Drop Off site adjacent to the Municipal Building.  For more information, contact the Rockaway Township Health Department at

Mayor Louis S. Sceusi of Rockaway Township wishes to remind all residents to “Be a Good Neighbor – Be Bear Aware”.  With the arrival of spring, New Jersey’s black bears are emerging from their dens in search of food and mates, increasing the likelihood of encounters with citizens and nuisance complaints.

In order to educate the public, the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection is requesting that the Township remind all residents that feeding bears – intentionally or unintentionally by carelessly leaving out food or garbage – is not only dangerous, it is illegal.  Feeding black bears has serious consequences – bears that associate people with food are more likely to become a nuisance and pose a public-safety threat.

Rockaway Township 319H Stormwater Quality Grant Recommended for Approval

Rockaway Township Mayor Louis S. Sceusi is happy to announce that the Township has been notified by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, Bureau of Watershed Planning, that the $198,000 Stormwater Quality Grant Application for the Beaver Brook Watershed has been recommended for approval.  The Rockaway Township Administration has been working with the White Meadow Lake Property Owners Association to develop a plan that would reduce the amount of sedimentation and pollutant loading into White Meadow Lake and the Beaver Brook Watershed.  The White Meadow Lake Property Owners Association has developed an extensive data base through years of water quality testing which Steven Levinson, Rockaway Township’s Business Administrator and Public Health Officer, believes was instrumental in the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection favorable determination.

The $198,000 three year grant provides funding for the installation of stormwater quality structures and the evaluation of structure efficiency.  “I am pleased that Mayor Louis  Sceusi and his administration continue to demonstrate their concern and commitment to all sectors of our vast municipality,” said Councilman Dr. Alexander Gellman, who helped in the project.  Mayor Sceusi stated, “I look forward to working with the NJDEP and to the implementation of this project and I hope that this will provide a model for our other lake communities.

November 12, 2004:

The Historical Society of the Rockaways and Rockaway Township recently held the opening of the exhibit “One Township-Many Communities”, a collection of historic photographs of Rockaway Township.  The unveiling of 20 framed black and white photos took place on Tuesday, November 30th at 7 p.m. in the Atrium of the Rockaway Township Municipal Building, located at 65 Mt. Hope Road, Rockaway Township.

The exhibit, which was made possible by a 2004 Grant from the Morris County Heritage Commission for the Morris County Board of Chosen Freeholders (funded by the New Jersey Historical Commission, a division of the Department of State), will be permanently displayed in the Rockaway Township Municipal Building, Library and Police Headquarters.  The photographs will also be available for special events at the Ford-Faesch House and occasional display at other historic venues at the discretion of the Society.

The selection of framing materials and photography were chosen by Project Creator and Director Ingrid Sceusi, award-winning graphic designer and wife of Mayor Louis S. Sceusi and Eleanor Mason, Historical Society Archive Curator and local historian.  The featured 20 images include buildings, industry and ways of life long gone from Rockaway Township communities of Mount Hope, White Meadow Lake, Upper and Lower Hibernia, Lake Telemark, Lyonsville, Marcella and Green Pond.  Frames were assembled by volunteers: Diane Power, Tom Brackin and John Dunado.

“This is a landmark exhibit that shows the long and fascinating history of Rockaway Township.  It’s just the beginning!  Hopes are that the exhibit will grow, as we’ve got quite an extensive archive of historical photography in varied subjects to choose from,” says Society President John Dunado.   The Society has already applied for a grant from the Morris County Heritage Commission for 2005 for additional framed photography and will be announcing its “Adopt a Photo” sponsorship program as of January 2005, whereas private individuals or businesses can sponsor a framed archival photo of their choice.  An extra bonus of the program has been the donation of images from the several local private collections, to be added to the Society’s archive, as well as, the “Arcadia” series book currently being worked on.

October 22, 2004:

Rockaway Township Mayor Louis S. Sceusi has announced that on October 18, 2004, the Township Attorney filed a Notice of Appeal regarding the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection’s September 30th Grant of Exemption from the New Jersey Highlands Water Protection and Planning Act for Christ Church.
This action asserts that Rockaway Township was denied due process, that the NJDEP’s determination provided no analysis or reason for determination and that the DEP erred in its interpretation of the exemption.
One of Rockaway Township’s primary water producing wells is located on the Agilent property in the Beaver Brook Aquifer. Mayor Sceusi concluded that the additional environmental protections conferred to “core” designated properties in the Beaver Brook Aquifer are vital to protecting the quality of the Township’s drinking water.

August 26, 2004:

The Rockaway Township Planning Board granted approval for the construction of a 16-screen movie theater at the Rockaway Townsquare Mall at their August 16, 2004 meeting.
Mayor Louis S. Sceusi and other municipal officials have been working with Simon Property Group to establish a movie theater complex as an integral component to the Rockaway Townsquare Mall complex. Loews Theaters will be constructing a 16-screen, 3200-seat movie theater with state-of-the-art amenities, including stadium seating, two party rooms and a wheelchair accessible mezzanine level as part of the project.
The proposed cinema center is the fulfillment of a year long commitment by Simon Property Group and the Mayor to once again provide movie theaters for the benefit of the Rockaway Township community after the previous theaters in the Mall unexpectedly failed to renew their lease with Simon over a year ago.
According to Kevin Sims, Vice President of Community Center Development at Simon Property Group, “Rockaway Townsquare has always been a focal point within Rockaway Township, but it has been the spirit of cooperation between Simon and Rockaway Township officials that has resulted in these successes that will contribute to an even greater degree to the quality of life for Township residents and further reinforce Rockaway Townsquares appeal as a shopping destination.”
