Marriage License Information

Fee:  $28.00 (Check or cash is acceptable only)

The couple can apply in either the municipality where the bride or groom resides.

If neither applicant is a resident of the state they must apply in the municipality where the ceremony will occur.

In Rockaway Township this may be done between the hours of 8:30 am and 4:00 pm, Monday thru Friday. It takes about 10-15 minutes to complete the application.

The bride, groom and one witness, who can be a relative or friend over the age of 18, must personally come to the Municipal Building to apply for the license. If it is inconvenient for both bride and groom to appear at the same time, each may come separately with the same witness.

We ask that you come in no later than a week before you are getting married. There is a 72 hour waiting period from the day you apply.

Please have this information when you come to apply:

. Date you are getting married
. Name and address of the person performing the ceremony
. Mother’s maiden name and birthplace
. Father’s name and birthplace
. Photo Identification with address - P.O. Box not accepted
. Birth certificate or passport

If this is not your first marriage, you must show a copy of your filed divorce papers or Death Certificate. This will be returned to you immediately.

Note: As of August 1997, blood work is no longer necessary.
After the marriage has taken place, it is always wise to obtain certified copies of the marriage license. These are used for many reasons such as proof of a name change of the bride for social security purposes, motor vehicle documents, credit cards, etc.

A certified copy can be obtained in the town where the marriage took place.

The fee for a certified copy of a birth, death or marriage certificate, civil union certificate is $10.00 per copy.
